I have always been passionate about stories. My directing journey began when I arrived from Australia with my backpack and my dream of working in the theatre. I didn’t have any experience of making theatre but going to the theatre and being transported into other people’s worlds and stories was the thing that had always excited and inspired me. I realised the role of the director was going to suit me so I studied theatre direction at Central School of Speech and Drama. I then went on to win the highly sought after Carlton/ Donmar Traineeship and spent a year as assistant director to Sam Mendes at the Donmar Warehouse. It was during this year that I had my first glimpse of the world of film and TV production. I was excited when I realised this was another way I could tell stories.
Having finished my year at The Donmar I directed a number of successful theatre productions before making the crossover from stage to screen directing via a stint as a script editor on EastEnders. Directing Doctors and Holby gave me the opportunity to hone the technical skills needed to direct for the screen.
My first short film, Heard, starring Louise Brealey (Sherlock, Discovery of Witches) and Ferdinand Kingsley (Silo, Reacher) was selected for a number of BAFTA recognised festivals.
In 2017, I was selected to be part of the BAFTA Elevate scheme for talented female directors looking to progress in high-end television and features. Over recent years I’ve had a wonderful time directing high end dramas including Outlander, The Spainish Princess seasons 1 & 2, The Good Karma Hospital, Sanditon 1, Dalgliesh 1, and on 2 seasons of Call the Midwife.
When I arrived here with my backpack and my dreams I never imagined I’d be bringing to life worlds as diverse as Tudor England and contemporary India, tackling topics from FGM to the American Civil War. Every job is an adventure, a chance to explore new worlds and dig deeper into what makes us tick as human beings. I’m excited to see where my journey takes me next.
